Meta's Spending on Private Aircraft for Zuckerberg and Sandberg
In 2022, Meta paid $6.6 million for Sheryl Sandberg and Mark Zuckerberg to travel in private aircraft. According to The Wall Street Journal, Meta lost $6.6 million in 2022 as a result of its CEO Mark Zuckerberg and its COO Sheryl Sandberg's use of private aircraft. According to the report, that amount is an increase of over 55% from 2019. According to The Financial Times, Zuckerberg's personal jet expenses in 2022 totaled $2.3 million. According to data obtained using flight-tracking software, his private plane made 28 journeys in the first two months of the year, which generated 17 times more carbon than the typical American in a year.
In 2021, the business incurred costs of about $27 million for Zuckerberg's security and private jet travel, with $1.6 million going on his flights alone. Meta paid $1.8 million for his flights in 2020, according to the 2023 proxy statement of the corporation. According to data from ISS Corporate Solutions, the Financial Times reported that in 2022, S&P 500 companies spent $41.3 million on corporate jet travel for their CEOs. According to the Journal, Sandberg left her position as COO of Meta in September 2022 after 14 years with the company, and since then, Meta has not covered her travel expenses.
But due to 'continuing threats to her safety,' the board decided to cover the cost of her private security till the end of June 2023, according to Reuters. As previously reported by Business Insider, some extremely wealthy tourists are purchasing airliners instead of typical private aircraft. For instance, Boeing has sold more than 200 of its business jets to wealthy individuals, including members of the royal family. A request for comment from Business Insider made outside of regular business hours was not immediately answered by Meta.
